Training and development

I run development programmes and organisational reviews, and lecture, facilitate and chair meetings. I'm a visiting professor in Portugal (Coimbra School of Nursing) and the UK (Kingston University).  I am regularly invited to speak at conferences and lead seminars in the UK and overseas. Here are some of my projects:

  • As Programme Director since 2016 of the Global Nursing Leadership Institute run by the International Council of Nurses, I work every year on a programme to help 30 nurse leaders from round the world to improve their policy and political competence and contribute more effectively to nursing and health strategies and projects.
  • In January 2018 I visited Belize to work with Diana Mason on helping nursing leaders develop their policy leadership competences and create a new National Action Plan for Nursing for Belize.
  • From 2016 to the present I've made many presentations in the UK, US, Portugal and elsewhere on the Triple Impact report and the global nursing campaign it inspired (All Party-Parliamentary Group on Global Health (2016): Triple Impact: how developing nursing will improve health, promote gender equality and support economic growth.
  • As a GateHouse Associate, I teach courses on the Innovation Imperative, and on Political Competence in Public Services. In 2012 I worked with inspiring co-facilitator Howell Schroeder on an innovation programme at the Emergency Department, Whittington Hospital, London, and again with him in 2013 with health scientists from NHS North West. I also ran a short programme on political competence in public services for junior doctors at Imperial NHS Trust. Read our thoughts on innovation and much more at
  • I have a career-long personal and professional interest in stress-busting. I'm an affiliate of a great new online initiative called E-Stress Management. This offers a simple, effective, online stress-management course;  I've been coached by its founder Pauline Lummas and recommend it really highly."target="e...

Some unsolicited comments from my clients:

From a scholar of the ICN Global Nursing Leadership Institute, 2017:

‘Could not have asked for a better experience! Leaving completely energized and part of a global community of nursing leaders.’

From Camden and Islington NHS Foundation Trust, London, 2012:

‘It wasn’t just the organising team who thought you did a fantastic job chairing our annual nursing forum. You really did lift it with your brilliance of little touches and experience. We have the evaluations and the punters agree – you are a star!’

‘I arrived grumpy having been told by my manager I had to come, but the good-humoured and passionate chair woke me up and I left having really enjoyed from the day’

‘I’m going to ask to go on a placement on your ward’ – nursing student

‘Jane really earned our respect – a difficult job done well and I liked her style’ – nurse executive

From Queen Mary/City University, London, 2012:

‘You provided a wonderful conference session, so relevant to everyone as you rooted it so much in your East London experience. You inspired our external examiner so much that she is going to spend a few days exploring East London when she comes to the next exam board!’

From Queen’s Nurses who attended my writing workshops for the Queen’s Nursing Institute in 2012:

 ‘The workshop was great.
Jane was very knowledgeable and supplied lots of hints and tips that will prove very useful.  She made the process of submission to publications seems less daunting, which has encouraged me to send my papers for consideration.’

‘The training from Jane on writing for publication was brilliant. It has put things into perspective and I hope I can get something ready for publishing in the coming months!’

‘Thanks for the fab workshop, and making me believe that I may be able to get something published one day.’
